Spike Africa

Project Description

On the corner of 4th and Broadway is the old Cosgrove Building, the foundation of which dates back to the 1800s. Over the years it has had many additions and renovations. The most current renovation is the tenant improvement project for the Spike Africa Restaurant. This project had Watkins Landmark peeling away layers of San Diego construction history in order to highlight the historical aspects of the structure while building a restaurant that is on its way to becoming one of the landmarks of the Gaslamp Quarter.

Challenges

The main challenge with Spike Africa was making it modern while still respecting the historic architecture and building components. Working with an older project we had to be careful with the parts that had not aged well and were fragile.

Results

  • An open concept design that showed the history of the Gaslamp District while still being modern.
  • A wonderful restaurant that has since come under new ownership and is now under the name of Gaslamp Fish House.
